The museum is holding a family open day exploring 'Your First World War Heritage' on Monday 27 May 2019, 11.00am to 3.00pm. Admission will be free. There will be a range of hands on children's activities throughout the day. They will explore what children did at home and school during the first world war. Advice and guidance will be available to anyone interested in researching a family member's involvement in the conflict and would like help discovering more. There will be a number of displays exploring the people who fought in the war. They will also reveal the effects of the war on the home front, including the role of hospitals and nurses in the local area. The short film 'Tommy's Sisters', will be screened at various times throughout the day. Produced by State of Play Arts and ScreenPLAY, the film is about life on the home front in East Dorset during 1916, seen through the eyes of four women and a young girl. The museum is continuing to uncover the stories and experiences behind the photographs and any surviving letters, diaries, postcards, medals or other artefacts that local families have kept. We would like to hear from members of the public who have information, stories or items that can help build a picture of what the people of East Dorset did during the war. This event is part of the museum's project 'The One Hundred Year Heritage of the First World War for Wimborne and East Dorset'. The project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
